In these extremely hot summer days, it makes me feel cool when I saw an app title “Ice is Nice”. This is a new app in the Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library series. It is a nonfiction series that introduces basic science concepts of real life objects to young children. Ice is Nice is about the animals and geography of North and South Poles.
Sally and Dick visit the North and South Poles with the Cat in the Hat. They meet native animals—reindeer, musk oxen, polar bears, caribou, and different kinds of penguins. They find out how the animals stay warm in the freezing cold, discover why it’s colder at the South Pole than at the North Pole, and learn that scientists are studying to keep both poles cold.
This app is based on the book of the same title. It is designed for kids 5 to 10 years old. There are two ways to experience the story:
Read it Myself: read the book the same way as reading a traditional book.
Read to Me: professionally narrated. Each word is highlighted when read.
Either way, kids can explore the book by tapping the objects on the pages. Corresponding word will zoom up when an object is tapped. Kids can also tap on a word on the page, that word will be read. There are words in bold. When those words are tapped, the definition of the word will pop up and be read to the kids.
iGameMom Comments:
If your kids like The Cat in the Hat (who doesn’t?) and like science, they will like this app. It introduces the science concepts at the right level: scientific enough to get the facts right, blended with interesting story line and kid friendly language. The professional narration adds a little more fun too.
The app works on iPhone/iPod and iPAD. It is now at the introductory price $3.99. Other titles in the series are $5.99.
If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.
