Do you like fishing? Have you taken kids with you go fishing? We love fishing. It is refreshing to see an early learning app designed around fishing theme. Fishing with Grandpa is a new app from Fairlady Media, who has the grandma and grandpa app series. Like other apps in the series, Fishing with Grandpa does a great job at smoothly incorporating learning into the fishing activities.
When kids start the app, they will be greeted by grandpa sitting in the boat. Kids will be asked to do activities to help grandpa fishing.
They will help grandpa to find the right gear, such as the fishing reel, fishing line, or anchor. Then kids are shown fishes under the water and asked to choose the right group of fishes by numbers, such as group of 3, or group 4. The next, kids will help the crab to go through a maze to find food.
What kind of fish will grandpa catch? Kids will find out after putting together a jigsaw puzzle, and they will see what salmon and other fishes look like. Kids will love to help grandpa choose a lure, cast the fishing line, hook the fish, and reel the fish in.
After they got the fish, kids are asked to identify the different object among 4 pictures that are seemingly the same. They will then pick the fishes of a specific color for grandpa. My favorite is to measure each fish and see how long each fish is.
Each time kids help grandpa catch a fish, they will be able to watch a fishing related video right from grandpa’s boat. From the video, kids will learn how lures are used and how to examine a lure, what is a bobber, how to fly lures and reel in.
While play fishing games, kids will learn:
Colors: red, green, blue, purple, yellow, orange, brown, white, black, pink
Number groups: one, two, three, four, five, six
Problem solving: puzzles and mazes
Measurement: using a ruler
Fishing vocabulary: lure, bobber, reel, hook, bait, line, life vest, anchor, oar, and more.
