Over in the Jungle, a rainforest rhyme by Dawn Productions is a reading, counting and sing-along interactive app. There’s so much packed in here, that you certainly get quite a bit of content for your dollar with this app!
I would say it works best with 3-5 year olds (however, there’s probably something of interest to a wider age range in terms of factual information contained in the app) and it gives kids the opportunity to have lots of variety in their interactive fun. Telling kids all about the animals in the rainforest, it manages to combine the description of the animals with clever use of rhyme to be informative, interesting and fun.
It looks really good and is visually very appealing. Readers have opportunities to count sequentially, move the various rainforest babies and watch them react as they would in real life. There’s a counting game too where readers search for the number of animal babies. As each page counts from one to ten it means there are plenty of learning opportunities contained within the app that are both clear and more subtle.
I love the artwork, it looks stunning and the animal movements are really naturalistic in feel. My son and I really liked the way the ants moved across the screen and the fluttering of the butterflies, for example. We also especially enjoyed the ‘Sing to Me’ feature in particular. It’s fun and just a bit different.
For me, the really interesting bit is the information about each animal species. It’s absolutely fascinating, and you get to find out how different species look after their babies. It’s a very informative and educational app yet fun to use. For the animal lovers of you out there it’s well worth a purchase. I could also see this app being used very successfully in an educational setting such as kindergarten or in the early years of school.
Over in the Jungle is available for iPhone, iPod and iPAD. It is usually $4.99 on App Store. It is now on promotion at $3.99 on App Store.
