Free App: Over 3000 Searchable STEM Activities for Kids

Howtosmile app

Do you like STEM activities? STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering Math. I like STEM topics and activities. Even you don’t expect your child to be in a STEM related field when they grow up, it is still good to expose them in as many STEM subjects as possible, as it is not just about the knowledge, it is about the thinking ability and problem solving skills, which are important no matter what they do when they grow up. Over 3000 searchable STEM (science technology engineer math) activities for kids from preschool to high school - compiled by top science museums in the US. All are FREE, can be accessed on computer or mobile devices via the free app.

While I was exploring DIY Sun app we introduced a while ago. I find another wonderful website and free app: Howtosmile.

It is a website and app put together by a group of science museums dedicated to bringing STEM out of the classroom to the real world. The hosts collect the best educational materials on the web and put them together in an organized and searchable structure. All activities are designed for preschool to elementary school kids to learn in non-classroom settings. I am sure teachers can still use the ideas in the classroom, but I do like the design for home learning.

I primarily used the free app, but the website functions about the same. When you are in the app, you can browse by Topic or simply go to the Top 20 Activities. There are over 20 topics to explore: Animals, Computers, Financial Literacy, Model Building, Music, Photography, Sports, and more.

On each activity, you will find a brief description of what this activity is about, and other information that help you decide if you want to do this activity, such as preparation time, learning time, kids age, resource availability, and estimated material cost. Since most activities are collected from the web, and they do have links to the websites who posted the activities originally, you need internet connection to get the full instructions for the activities.

So far my favorite is the LEGO Chemical Reactions from MIT. The paper bridge inspired by Curious George is fun for younger kids. I saw the Rainbow Density Experiment in the collection too. It is one of the experiments I’d like to do before summer ends.

Howtosmile is a great STEM resource for activity and project ideas. You can access the website on computer at http://howtosmile.org, or via the free app. The app is designed for iPhone and iPod, but function well on iPad too.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.
