My Monster Mayhem is an interactive book app for young children. It is listed among our 25 Monster Apps for Kids as a monster themed book app. It is a fun read, even if it is not during Halloween season. It is free for limited time, so definitely grab it before the price goes up.
A young girl gets in trouble with her mom for many reasons, sometime it is to slam the door, sometime it is to splash bath water on the floor, … But she has her reasons – the monsters in the house! Of course she has to fight the monsters.
The story is written in rhymes, plus the mischievous story line, it is a very fun book for the young children to read. There are monsters through out the book, some kids may not like it. But overall, there is not many scary scenes, and it is in general pretty safe for even toddlers to read the book.
Each page has light animations upon finger touch, either some funny sound effect or some unexpected movement of certain subjects or characters.
Through out the book, there are 20 hidden monsters for the kids to find. If they find all 20 of them, they can unlock a bonus puzzle game.
Kids can pick between two characters to read the book for them, Glenda Wragg, an older lady; or Leela Kapoor, a child. Kids can also turn the narration off to read the book by themselves.
I like some of the design details. For example, to move to the next page, you need tap on the forward arrow twice. This is to prevent page turning if kids accidentally touch the arrow. After the narration finished on each page, the words disappear from the page, giving a better picture viewing experience. Additionally, some of the pictures are in fact bigger than the screen. This in fact is by design. To see the un-shown part of the picture, kids need hold the picture and move slightly. A hint: some of the hidden monsters are at the un-shown part of the picture.
Overall My Monster Mayhem is a fun read for young children. It is available for iPhone, iPod and iPad. It is also available on Google Play.
