City Nights is a beautiful picture book for kids on iPad. It depicts the feel of the night in the busy city through a child who is ready to go to bed. Beautifully illustrated and with short rhymes, it is a perfect bedtime book app to read with kids before they going to sleep.
The book starts with a child who is ready for bed, and watching the street from the window. “In the city, in the city night, sunset pink and red, as I climb into bed.” Following the child’s view and hearing, kids will notice the sound of bikes and skateboards being put back into the storage, animals finding homes to pass the night, cars and trucks running on the streets, stores closing the doors, kids running to homes, … Kids will also notice the city lights shining, plus occasional sirens and loud noise of garbage can falling.
As it gets late, the streets are getting quieter. Kids will start noticing sounds that they won’t even pay attention to during the day. The sound of side walk sign changing, the apartment light turning off, people’s shoes clicking the street, and humming-like low talking voice, …
At last, more and more lights are off, the moon is out, and child is in bed sound sleep. By now, the whole screen turns black, and all you see is “good night” accompanied with soothing music.
I would love to fall into sleep with this book every day, with the peaceful music and calming narrator’s voice of “good night”.
The illustration is beautiful, makes you feel the busy city life during the day, yet everything is slowing down and getting quiet for the night.
