Photo Archive of World War 2 Pictures post image

How to teach history to kids? Everyone has his own preference. To me it has never worked well when the teachers just asked us to memorize the historical facts. Thinking back, the part of history lessons I still remember are the historical stories I learned. They could be a story told by a teacher, a historical movie or book I read, or some historical photos I saw. So when it comes to history lessons, I prefer first hand immersion experience. Movies, pictures, photos all help us to experience the history event closer. Now teaching is entering a digital age, it is a lot easier to leverage all these digital tools to bring history to life. We shared 10 Apps for Kids to Learn History, which are all great learning tools for kids to experience history events. Today we share another wonderful resource of photo archive of World War 2 pictures.

Photogrammar is a free photo archive of the America during 1935 to 1946. It is a web-based platform for organizing, searching, and visualizing the 170,000 photographs from 1935 to 1945 created by the United States Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information (FSA-OWI). Among those pictures, there are approximately 90,000 photographs with geographical information.

When using the site, users can search photos by photographer, date, and place. There is a time slider at the top left corner of the screen. There are a total of 15 photographers users can choose from. Search by place is easy. Users can pick the location on the map, and keep zooming the map till it is the desired level.

I am mostly amazed by the lab. One of the features in the lab is Treemap. You can choose photos by categories. There are over 10 categories, such as Work, People, Home, Land, War, … Click on any of the category will show you sub-categories. Under Work, you will see Agriculture, Mining, Selling, Fishing, Research, … Then there are more sub-categories. It is an interesting way to search for pictures your are looking for.
