I recently discovered a great free documentary app that streams documentary films. It is called Docurama, and it is free. I like the wide subject selection and the high quality of the films. The app provides easy on-demand access to over 600 films, a number expected to increase to over 1,000 by the end of 2014. With so many good educational movies for kids, it is a great resource for family, homeschool and classroom learning projects.
The Docurama app currently has 16 channels. It offers audiences free, unlimited access to real-life stories across a wide array of genres, including:
Pop Culture, like Woody Allen: A Documentary, Best Worst Movie;
Sports Thrillers, such as Carmelo’s Way, Endless Summer, Faster and Faster;
Biography, with titles like Virtual JFK, Fidel, Johnny Cash;
War, History & Politics, we see titles like Hell & Back Again, The Weather Underground;
Arts & Music, some examples, The Swell Season, Beatles Stories, Soundtrack for a Revolution;
Human Interest, such as The Waiting Room, Hungry for Change, The World Before Her;
Travel & Leisure, sample titles like Crazy Horse, The Highest Pass;
Environmental activism, like HBO’s Gasland, Save The Farm;
The app offers fresh content and programming each month and customizes its offerings to match viewer demand and reflect current events, trends and seasonal holidays. Numerous Academy-Award nominees and winners are scheduled to be featured on Docurama including films from Alex Gibney, Fred Wiseman, Stacy Peralta, Liz Garbus and Josh Fox.
From Docurama’s press release, we learned they are going to add interviews with renowned documentary filmmakers and festival programmers, film festival coverage, sneak peek clips for upcoming films, short form and other original programming.
We like Docurama, it is going to be used a lot at our house. It is a great addition to Smithsonian’s free app, which we also use a lot.
Docurama is available for free on iPhone, iPod and iPad. It is also free on Amazon App Store.
If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.
If you like Docurama, I am sure you will like another great documentary app of high quality documentary shows from Smithsonian, and it is also free. For more good movies for kids, please visit our Educational Movies for Kids page.
