LumiKids just launched their 2nd app LumiKids Beach. It is a series of apps from Lumosity designed specially for kids age 5 and younger. I liked their first app LumiKids Park, so once the new app is available, I checked it out right away. It is another wonderful early learning app for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners. It is free right now.
As stated by the developer team, the LumiKids series is not intended to be brain training for kids, but instead aims to be a digital play space that challenges cognitive, motor and social-emotional skills through intuitive and adaptive activities. The design ideas for the activities in the app are from research findings in child psychology, developmental neuroscience, and early education.
In this 2nd app of the series, kids will have 4 activities:
1. Returning beach gears to the owners: kids have to watch the visual signs to decide which gear belongs to who, and take each gear to the right character. The characters are going to have different reactions depends on if they get the gear they want. It’s a good activity for parents to talk with kids about sharing and interacting with others.
2. Coloring the underwater sea life: a fun activity for fine motor skills. While kids play more, the complexity of the scene increases. Kids will be delighted to see that the underwater scene comes to life after they put in the colors.
3. Building Sand castles: kids will use the sand buckets to build sand castles. Again the complexity level increases over the time. Kids also need learn to avoid using water balloons, which will water down the castle they are building. It is a good activity for response inhibition skills.
4. Matching singing beach animals: a fun activity for auditory processing and memory skills. Kids touch the turtles to listen to their songs, and put those share the same pitch together. It is a twist of the traditional memory matching game, replacing visual signals with sounds.
Each activity will get more difficult as the children play along, so kids are not going to be bored.
When you start the app, you are asked to sign up an account, but you don’t need to put in any contact information, not even your child’s real name. If you sign up with an email address, you will be able to receive email updates of your child’s status.
LumiKids Beach is a fun app designed upon children development research. It is a good one to have if you have a child 5 and under. It is available on iPad. It is FREE now.
