What are your family values? How do you teach family values to your kids? There are so many aspects in family values: social, political, religious, cultural, work, moral, … I have traveled and lived in several countries and have friends from different cultural backgrounds. I see families from different cultural backgrounds have different family values. Additionally, with the social cultural change over time, family values change too. Years ago, we don’t see many single parent families or families of same sex parents, now we see many of these families living happy lives and raising wonderful children. So it is necessary to re-visit your family values once in a while and share your new perspective with kids. I always find it easier to start topics like these with kids by watching a movie together or reading a book together. Especially with movies and TV shows, kids can see and feel the stories, so it is easy for them to relate to whatever you want to talk about. Today we share movies and TV shows that provide perspectives on family values.

If you are looking for some TV shows to get a good feel about the new family dynamics, I liked Modern Family very much. With 3 different types of families inter-related to each other, it brings the new meaning of modern families right in front of you. Another show that just started on Netflix is Grace and Frankie, about two women helping each other when their husbands decided to leave them to form their own family. It is funny and fearless, featuring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston. It is a perfect example of how today’s families can shift, rearrange and blend in unexpected ways.

While most of these are great examples for movies that show family values, Grace and Frankie is by NO means for any children. It’s rated TV-M.
Thanks for your input. The TV show is recommended by Common Sense Media to kids age 16+. It is not for young children, that is why we did not list it under the young age group. It is for older teens and parents to understand new family types and new family dynamics, as we explained in the beginning of the paragraph.
